"Living and working in the same community as the people I care for means my clients and I share a lot in common. We always have plenty of local news and stories to chat and laugh about!”

What does a carer do?

A carer provides dignified support to enable the elderly, couples, or younger adults with complex needs to live independently. As a carer, tasks may include:

  • Personal care, like helping your client get up in the morning

  • Mobility support to help clients stay stable at home or out and about

  • Assisting with household duties such as washing up and taking out bins

  • Running errands, shopping, and picking up prescriptions

  • Preparing or assisting with healthy meals

  • Providing companionship, sharing a cup of tea and a chat

  • Helping people get out in the community

  • Accompanying clients to see relatives, friends, and neighbours

  • Assisting with household admin and bills

The key role of a carer is to enable and assist individuals to remain independent, providing continuity, a familiar face, and peace of mind. Opportunities for carers range from visiting care to living with clients, supporting daily with personal care, cooking, and mobility, and sometimes even accompanying them on trips or holidays.
